DEF Report: Generative AI and critical thinking Implications of changing employment patterns

During our regular Digital Enlightenment Board meetings we discuss trends and topics that we notice swirling around our respective milieus. Last year, throughout 2025, there was an undeniable increase in anxiety about the workforce implications of Generative AI, especially the impacts likely to be felt, and in fact being felt, by graduating and junior software developers. 

The board tasked Cristiano Codagnone to explore the phenomenon and most particularly, to build on the topics raised in a talk given by Alexander Pretschner - referenced in the report. 

Cristiano has outlined four possible workforce scenarios and they are worth careful consideration as all scenarios carry implications for the real world.
